About the Climate Group

The Community Climate Task Force was organized in October 2019. It is comprised of residents from Independence and Monmouth, Oregon.

We meet monthly, currently via Zoom.

We spent the first year learning what other cities were doing to address climate change. We reviewed the action plans put together by Corvallis, Silverton, and Milwaukee Oregon, as well as looking at larger cities such as Denver, Colorado. We invited actively involved residents from surrounding cities to help us learn how they had gotten to where they are now, and what they were working on currently.

In the fall of 2020, we began our first major push: to get our cities to each adopt a climate resolution, and work together to form a joint climate committee to develop a climate action plan, and advise the cities on steps we can take to cut our greenhouse gas emissions. Multiple months and city council meetings later, as of May 2021, both cities have passed a resolution, and the joint committee planning is under way.

We continue to talk to both city governments, and are also exploring ways of engaging the public directly, to encourage everyone to recognize both the need for the action, and the opportunity this moment offers to create a resilient and flourishing community.
